It was with great sadness that I said good-bye to the Downtown Redding book store and the little coffee shop (now, I don't even remember the name of the place) that shared space with it. After all that was where I learned my first "barista speak" - "I would like a long legged Blonde please" or a double espresso latte. I had some hope when I saw - after a long hiatus - a new restaurant going in there. However when it became clear the prices they were charging, I knew it would be short lived. This is, after all Redding and they were "Downtown". When I saw a new restaurant going in I was - to say the least blasé - ho hum I thought, another flash in the pan.
How wrong I was! And gratefully so.
The Fuji Restaurant is simply one of the best places to eat – ever!
Situated centrally on the corners of Placer and California streets, the Fuji Restaurant is within walking distance for hundreds of people working in the surrounding businesses. A simple five minute walk takes you to the door and once inside you are promptly greeted and seated.
Their menu features a wide selection of not only ethnic Japanese dishes like sushi and sashimi and noodles, but also a variety of Chinese dishes as well. Everything you would want, all in one place.
As far as price goes, I think the capper here would be the word “reasonable”. For example, my favorite order there is the “Bento Box” – teriyaki chicken (although it is available in beef), miso soup, rice, salad, tempura vegetables (including a delicious Large prawn) and your choice of either a California roll or some very tasty cheese puffs – really more than you can eat – for $6.25. Come on, $6.25? You better believe it and the beef is only a dollar more.
I have turned all my friends on to this place and every one of them has shared my enthusiasm.
Try it – you will not regret it.
Oh – P.S. The best time to go is about 11:30 or after 1:30, to beat or miss the lunch time crush as this place is popular, and rightly so.
